The Good Life: 17 Sep 2018

Hello Good Lifers,

The program covered several different areas of interest … art, live theatre and books! All activities I really enjoy, as I know many of our listeners do.

My first guest was a young local artist named Amanda Jean Filleul whose exhibition is about to open at the Red Earth Gallery at the Mooroolbark Community Centre. This is her first solo exhibition.

Amanda Jean spoke of difficult years of her earlier life and of how she had found consolation and expression in her art, which is quite different and distinctive.

She explained that she had been inspired by exploring her dreams and the unconscious, soul development and healing. (There is a selection of her artwork on Facebook, but it defies description, so I suggest you check it
out.)

She studied Visual Arts at Monash University and I was intrigued to hear she also holds a Graduate Diploma in Pastoral Healing. Through the latter she is involved in an art program which supports holocaust survivors, of whom there are still a surprising number.

This intriguing exhibition opens on Tuesday 25th September, with the official opening at 6.00 P.M. on Thursday 27th. I am really looking forward to seeing Amanda Jean’s work in reality, as I am sure FB does not do justice to the vibrant colours she uses.

The name of Doc White is a very familiar and well regarded one up here in the Hills, where his blues music is regularly heard and widely admired. However, in this instance he has combined several of his other talents to Create and present a play for the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Firstly, his talent as a playwright was utilised in the creation of an event he called The Deluxe Old Time Radio Hour, presented to a live audience, and in which his skill as an actor is also displayed! Apart from its entertainment value, it takes a provocative look at the consequences of polarisation of thought and beliefs in our contemporary society.

His main character is Harry Harper, a loud, Left wing radio announcer who is the focal point in this three-hander.

The title of this play is a witty word play on the title of a weekly radio production which was the highlight of many households in the past. My Mum loved it. The Lux Radio Theatre was live to air every Sunday night at, I think, about 8.00 P.M. and was almost compulsory listening in many Australian households!

It was most interesting to speak with this talented local man and I regret not having seen the play in its presentation at the MCS Showroom. We can only hope that perhaps it will be presented at one of our local venues at some stage.. I am thinking of the Burrinja Theatre!?

…………………………………….

I LOVE my books, with a particular interest in crime novels. I have recently read Stern Justice by Adam Wakeling and this is a book which covers crime on a grand scale… the Japanese War Trials.

This book is obviously the end product of an incredible amount of research and the bibliography covers about 15 pages! When I spoke with the author he admitted it had virtually taken over his life as he accessed mountains of facts and figures from many different sources.

An outstanding feature of the book is his even-handedness in examining both sides of the ugly brutality of which the Japanese and the Allies were guilty and of the ruthlessness displayed towards prisoners.

He closely examines the personalities of the major war criminals and of the role played by Emperor Hirohito before, during and after the war. He also paints a strong picture of General McArthur and his role.

This is a hard read, but totally absorbing. So many statistics, but also full of fascinating information about which many of us are totally ignorant.. it was certainly informative for me. I highly recommend this book.
